GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Charles Dickens


Chapter 1

Pip is threatened by a man and has to bring him food the following day.

Chapter 2

Pip’s sister is harsh to both him and her husband. Pip robs the food and the file and runs away.

Chapter 3

Pip meets another convict. The first man eats all the food. The first convicts tries to liberate himself with the file and knows the second guy.

Chapter 4

It’s Christmas day. Pip’s sister is having a Christmas dinner. During the dinner Pip is looked down upon by the guest. He had replaced the Brandy with tar, but isn’t caught for it. As he runs because he’s bound to be caught for stealing the pork pie, he runs into soldiers.

Chapter 5

The soldiers, more particularly the sergeant, want the blacksmith to mend handcuffs. Once it’s done the soldiers Joe and Pip go and hunt the convicts.
The convicts are caught. The first one (who had the food) tried to murder the second. However he says HE stole the food (he covers Pip). Both convicts are taken on the Hulk (prison-ship) and back to the prison.

Chapter 6

They all go back home after the hunt.

Chapter 7

Pip explains how he learnt how to read and write, and he and Joe have a talk by the fire about his sister and Joe’s parents. Then Pip is taken by Mr Pumplechook to go and play at Mrs Havisham’s.

Chapter 8

Pip goes to the deadlike Mirs Havisham’s. He plays cards with Estella who is scornful at him. Pipp will have to go there again six days later.

Chapter 9

Pip goes back home and tells Mr Pumplechook, his sister and Joe what his day was like but he lies and emphasises the events or creates some of them.

Chapter 10

Pip fetches Joe at a bar. They meet a strange man who gives Pip a shilling wrapped into two one-pound notes. The man has Joe’s file.

Chapter 11

Pip goes to Miss Havisham’s. It’s her birthday and Pip meet several persons. He has to play cards with Estella once more, he fights with a boy and wins easily and then he gets to kiss Estella.

Chapter 12

Narration of the ‘job’ at Mrs Havisham’s. Joe is asked to come with Pip.

Chapter 13

Pip and Joe go to Mrs Havisham’s, Pip is given twebty-five pounds. He is bound to Joe as his apprentice and they all celebrate this. Pip doesn’t like the forge anymore.

Chapter 14

Pip is Joe’s apprentice and doesn’t like it at all ; he finds himself and home very common.

Chapter 15

Pip wants to pay a visit to Mrs Havisham. Joe has to give both Pip and Orlick half a Holiday. Estella is abroad for her education. Pip goes to Mr Pumplechook with Mr Wopsle. At the bar they found out that the convicts which have escaped have attacked Joe’s house. The sister was hit hardly by one of them.

Chapter 16

The sister happens to be very much impaired by the hit she received. She communicates through writing and makes friends with Orlick. The culprit is not found.

Chapter 17

Pip tries to learn as much as he can and hesitates between Biddy and Estella, as well as between his life and being a gentleman.

Chapter 18

Pip is offered to be trained as a gentleman. As a condition he simply must not try to know who is helping him. Mr Jaggers, the one presenting the proposition, will be his guardian.

Chapter 19

Pip has an argument with Biddy. He is very self-centered. He goes to the tailer, the hater and other shop-keepers. As he does, he learns how money provides respect. Then he goes to mister Pumplechook. The latter is very polite and deferential. A few days later Pip goes to London and departs with a great amount of nostalgia.

Chapter 20

Pip arrives in London and meets Mr Jagger. Mr Jagger talks to some clients in a dreadful way. Pip is given an allowance and accompanied by Jagger’s clerk to an inn where he is to meet Mr Pocket.

Chapter 21

The hotel happens to be in deriliction. Pip meets Mr Pocket Junior who happens to be the pale gentleman he fought with.

Chapter 22

Pip and Herbert (Mr Pocket Junior) make friends with each other. Herbet tells Pip about Miss Havisham and then they go to see Mr Pocket. Herbert has many siblings.

Chapter 23

The pockets are irresponsible and the domestic lead the house.

Chapter 24

Pip wants to keep is room at Bernard’s, he is also tutored by Mr Pocket in whose house he has his room. He also sees Mr Jaggers at work.

Chapter 25

Pip makes friends with people at Mr Pocket’s and goes and has dinner at Wemmick’s (Mr Jagger’s clerk).

Chapter 26

Drummle, Startop and Pip have dinner at Mr Jaggers’s.

Chapter 27

Joe visits Pip. Pip received a letter from Biddy announcing the visit. Both are very deferential to him. Joe has actually come to tell pip Estella wanted to see him.

Chapter 28

Pip takes the coach to go and see Estella. There are two convicts in the coach and one happens to be the same convict who gave Pip two notes and a coin.

Chapter 29

Pip goes at miss Havisham’s. Orlick is a porter there. Estella is more beautiful than ever. Miss Havisham urges Pip into loving the former. Then Mr Jaggers enters, they all dine and play and then both Pip and Jaggers go back to the hotel.
Self conscious narrator.

Chapter 30

Pip is very thoughtful about Estella. He and Herbert exchange confidences, then they go to Mr Wopsle’s play.

Chapter 31

Narration of Mr Wopsle’s playing of Hamlet. Mr Wopsle has lunch with Herbert and Pip at Bernard’s.

Chapter 32

Estella is to arrive in London the next day. Pip accompany Wemmick who has some business to attend to at the prison. Then Pip goes back to the coach-office and Estella arrives.

Chapter 33

Pip fetches Estella and they have a drink at the coach office, then Pip accompany her to Richmond and goes back to Hammersmith (at Mr Pocket’s).

Chapter 34

Pip and Herbert accumulate debts. Pip’s sister dies and Pip must attend internment the next Monday.

Chapter 35

Pip goes back to his village to attend his sister’s burial. He has a small quarrel with Biddy. Then he goes back to London having the feeling that he will not come back.

Chapter 36

Pip turns twenty-one and he is given five hundred pounds (by Jaggers) for his birthday. He will be given this every year (one quarter every 3 months). Then he invites Jaggers for the dinner.

Chapter 37

Pip visits Wemmick at his house, where he sees Miss Kiffins. He also pays a merchant in order for the latter to become Herbert’s partner.

Chapter 38

Pip narrates things about Estella, Miss Havisham and his staying at Miss Havisham’s and also how Estella once told him she didn’t smile at him because she didn’t deceive him.

Chapter 39

Pip lives in a luxurious place were lawyers live. As he is alone because Herbert is on a business trip, the convict visits him. It’s he who has given all the money to Pip to make him a gentleman. The money comes from his master who died and from his work. Pip is wrecked and disappointed at his behaviour towards Joe and Biddy and also realises Estella was after all not promised to him and that Miss Havisham was merely playing with him.

Chapter 40

Pip settles Mr Provis (the convict) and buy him decent clothes for he will remain in England definitively.


Chapter 41

Herbert and Pip discuss the convict’s case. It’s decided that he has to be taken elsewhere than England.

Chapter 42

The convict tells his story, he is guilty but as also partly been framed by the second convict, who happens to be the one who broke Miss Havisham’s heart.

Chapter 43

Pip want to go abroad. Pip lies to the convict and goes to see Estella. As she is not in Richmond, he finds another pretext and goes to Miss Havisham’s. Along his way he meets Drummle at the blue boar (the café) and quarrel with him (because they both compete for Estella’s favours) then he goes to Miss Havisham’s.

Chapter 44

Pip goes to Miss Havisham’s and has his heart broken by Estella. Then he goes to the temple but is given a strange message from Wemmick, and this message advises him not to go home (inside the temple).

Chapter 45

Pip goes to a cheap hotel and has a bad night. Then a goes to Wemmick who tells him that the other convict is in town and that he, pip was being watched. The first convict was sheltered by Herbert. Then Pip spends the day at Wemmick’s.

Chapter 46

Pip goes to see Provis and also sees Clara. He, Herbert and Provis agree on the dispositions which have to be taken. Pip rents a boat and will transport Provis on it later. He must be seen using it long ago so that there will not be any suspicion on the day of their going abroad.

Chapter 47

Pip goes to the theatre and see Mr Wopsle, but the latter tells him that the second convict sat behind him.

Chapter 48

Pip meets Jaggers, they dine together with Wemmick. During the diner it strikes Pip that Jaggers’s servant might be Estella’s mother (some of their features being alike). Pip asks Wemmick about her story. Pip is also given an note by which Miss Havisham ask for him to come (about Herbert).

Chapter 49

Pip goes to Miss Havisham’s. She is rather friendly to him, grants him the money he needs for Herbert, then she falls on the ground and cries. She apologies. When Pip goes up again to check upon her, she set herself on fire. Pip helps her and calls for help. Then, as she repents he goes back to town.

Chapter 50

Pip’s arms were burnt during the accident. We learn that Provis is Estella’s father.

Chapter 51

Pip goes to see Jaggers and Wemmick at their office to talk about Estella’s parents. After some talk about it Jaggers advises Pip to keep the secret for himself.

Chapter 52

Pip receives a note from Wemmick that he can try to escape. As he is disabled Startop and Herbert will help manoeuvring the boat. Then Pip receives a letter ordering him to go and meet its author at the marshes. He goes there in a hurry.

Chapter 53

Pip is trapped by Orlick. The latter confesses having attacked the aunt. He knows all of Pip’s plans and intends to kill him and then to denounce Provis. At the last moment Pip is saved by Herbert, Startop and Trabsboy. They go back to London and on the next day all three are about to make Provis quit the country.

Chapter 54

They make Provis escape by boat and, doing so, they stop at a public house where the hear that another boat is around. Also, at night, two men are seen by Pip having a look at their boat. When they try to go on board of a bigger boat, the other boat intercept them (a police one, and the other convict is on board). Provis and him fall in the water and fight, but only Provis will survive. He is arrested and has to be brought back to London (severely hurt), with Pip.

Chapter 55

Provis is tried. The money is lost to the other convict’s relative. Pip and Wemmick have a walk but it actually happens to be Wemmick’s marriage with Miss Skiffin.

Chapter 56

Provis is tried and sentenced to death, then he is imprisoned and suffers from his injuries. Pip visits him, and as he is about to die, he tells him about Estella.

Chapter 57

Pip is ill. He is arrested for cause of debts. Joe comes and takes care of him, and pays for the debts. Then, as Joe is gone, Pip resolves to go to Biddy and him and change his life.

Chapter 58

Joe and Biddy are married, so Pip goes to work with Herbert and lives happily this way.

Chapter 59

New ending : Pip goes back to the village many year after and he and Estella are united. Estella admits regretting separating from him.

Original ending : Pip meets Estella again, who has been remarried. Then they finally leave each other for the last time.
