Mary : Mrs Tranter’s impetuous servant ; in love with Sam.
Dr Grogan : A Darwinist, a scientific mind and good friend to Charles.
Possesses a telescope.
Uncle Ben : The uncle from whom Charles was to inherit, he marries
the Widow Miss Tomkins. Also called Sir Robert.
Miss Tomkins : The widow uncle Ben marries.
Mr Freeman : Ernestina’s father. A very reach marchant. He wants to
entrust Charles with his society and partly agrees with
Darwinism. He adapts himself.
Sir Th. Burgh : Ex-school of Charles, doesn’t change, pursues the same
activities as his ancestors.
The prostitute : Also called Sarah. Opposite of the other Sarah : not
modern and imprisoned by her destiny.
Mrs Endicott : Hotel proprietary. Judges people’s value at a glance.
Train passenger : Actually John Fowles himself (or the narrator).
Montague : Charles’ solicitor.
