THE CARETAKER
Harold Pinter
ACT 1
*scene one : Aston welcomes a trump. The later has a troubled past. His belongings are in a bar and he has an assumed name Bernard Jenkins. His real name is Davies and his paper have been in another man’s possession for years. He quickly sets himself in.
Ritual of entering/quitting the room : lights & door. The trump is clever and his speech gets him where he wants. => shoes, sleeping
It’s visible when he first talk about accommodation and the place.
*scene two : Davies and Aston talks. Aston gives Davis a Key and goes out. Davies is racist and minds of everything. Aston goes out and Mick (the brother) comes back and finds Davis.
First talk is a battle who did’ etc …
ACT 2
*scene one : Davies meets Mick. Mick believes Davies to be a thief. Aston comes back with Davies’s bag. The three quarrel for it. The bag isn’t his. Aston asks Davies whether he wants to become a caretaker for this place but Davies is reluctant.
Their talk is violent ; also there are loopholes because of Mick.
Loopholes also at the very end , about Davies assumed name.
*scene two : Davies and Mick get on well together and get acquainted from scratch. Davies criticises Aston a little, there is a beginning of quarrel but eventually Mick asks Davies to become Caretaker.
Davies knows how to get what he wants => dialogue : shoes, etc …
*scene three : Davies is quite demanding with Aston. Aston tells him about when he was operated on.
Reversed balance of powers, the person being helped is demanding with its creditor.
ACT 3
*scene one : Davies and Mick want to run the place. Davies knows how to set himself in. He criticises Aston. Aston gives him a pair of shoes but he doesn’t even thank him.
Lots of tension in this scene : Mick goes when Aston comes in. ‘bastard’.
*scene two : Davies and Aston have a fierce quarrel. Aston fires Davies.
Lots of tension in this scene, too : verbal + physical (knife)
Cyclical sign => mending the plug è Davies is moving out
*scene three : While Davies tries to turn Mick against his brother, they both have a quarrel. Mick goes out after he and his brother smiled at each other. Davies then tries to turn Aston against Mick, but it doesn’t work and Davies goes away.
Mick’s shouting ; the Buddha breaks => symbol ; the situation is exploding.
Mick’s asking for name + loopholes è the situation has gone back to its beginning.
General remark about the play : Each time Davies criticises Aston, Mick gets ill-at-ease and points it out to Davies.
