DEATH OF A SALESMAN
Arthur Miller

ACT ONE :

Willy Loman comes back home. He speaks with his wife Linda. He cannot drive anymore, he isn’t focused enough, and his job requires him to drive a lot. Biff (tough and manly) and his younger brother discuss their careers. Although he has tried countless job Biff isn’t happy, he hasn’t found what he was looking for and hasn’t found the right girl for himself either. Happy (handsome and cunning) has plenty of girls, his own apartment and is successful in business. They talk about buying a ranch together and doing a job which would be more physical. Willy, their father, speaks alone in the kitchen and talks to young Biff and Happy. On stage, those remembrances are performed. Charley comes and plays cards, and then again Willy has visions. Then Willy has remembrances about his late brother and how he missed an opportunity to join him in his business and to make money. Linda tells the boys the accident Willy had weren’t really accidents. He tried to kill himself. He isn’t paid anymore and his job is at the lowest. Learning that, Biff tries to patch up and will actually go and look for a job. Eventually the two brothers will try to get into business together. Everybody then gets happier despite a last short quarrel. Biff removes the rubber pipe (which Willy used to try to commit suicide).

ACT TWO :

Willy feels much better. He has slept well and the boys are already on their way to ask for support for their business. Willy goes to Howard to ask him for a job in the town and no longer a travelling one, but Howard actually fires him. Willy needs money to pay for his insurance and other stuffs. He goes to Charley as usual. First he sees Bernard (Charley’s son and Biff’s boyhood friend) who is a successful lawyer. He asks him the secret of success. Then Charley gives Willy money. Actually Charley has been offering Willy a job for quite some time but Willy has always refused out of pride. At the restaurant Biff tell his father it hasn’t worked well. Then Willy is so shaken up that he starts having remembrances right intermixed with his talk with the boys. The boys go away with the ladies and Willy is left alone. Then he has a remembrance of what changed Biff’s life. He saw he father with his mistress in Boston. Then the boys are banished from the house by Linda and Willy plants seeds in the garden, talking to Ben at the same time. Willy wants to commit suicide for the money of his insurance and also in order to show that he is known (he thinks everybody would come at his funeral). Willy and Biff quarrel. As Biff cries Willy notices Biff loves him. He know wants to suicide so that Biff has money. Even though Happy is full of project Willy is experiencing a total delirium and goes away with the car. Then it’s his burial.

REQUIEM :

Nobody came to the funeral. Happy is going to try to fulfil his father’s dream.

The flute is symbolical of Willy’s father (he played it).
‘the funny thing is that you are more worth dead than alive’ => he gets suicidal again.
Knock them dead è encouragement & success : recurrent formula
Biff takes the fountain pen è he is back to his old self
Pretending è when things don’t go well, => they pretend so they are ‘like father like son’ despite their differences’.
Both Biff and Willy rely on people remembrance of them.
